SUITABLE SUBSTRATES
▪ Concrete at least 28 days old
Consult MAPEI’s Technical Services Department for installation recommendations regarding substrates and conditions not listed.
SURFACE PREPARATION
▪ Concrete surfaces must be clean and free of loose particles, efflorescence, paints, tars, grease, asphaltic materials, bond breakers, curing compounds, wax, and any foreign substance or any conditions that may affect product performance or proper bonding.
▪ Mechanically profile and prepare concrete surfaces by engineer-approved methods in accordance with the most current ICRI 310.2R guidelines to obtain a concrete surface profile (CSP) between #2 and #3.
▪ Ensure that the concrete substrate is saturated surface-dry (SSD) before installation of Concrete Renew.
▪ Repair any concrete defects or spalls with either Mapecem Quickpatch, Planitop 18 ES, or another approved MAPEI repair mortar. Reach out to your MAPEI technical representative for product recommendations. Refer to the respective products’ TDSs for application instructions.
▪ Remove all the unsound and contaminated concrete. The substrate must have a pH of 10 or higher and a minimum tensile strength of 175 psi (1.21 MPa).
▪ Static cracks should be filled with a two-component epoxy resin such as Epojet™ [NA], Epojet LV [NA] or another approved MAPEI epoxy resin. Reach out to your MAPEI technical representative for product recommendations. MAPEI does not warrant that cracks will not reappear, even when following established repair techniques.
▪ For porous substrates, apply a scrub coat created from a 3-to-1 ratio of water to Planicrete UA before applying Concrete Renew.
MIXING
Before product use, take appropriate safety precautions. Refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for details.
1. One 25-lb. (11.3 kg) bag of Concrete Renew requires 2.39 U.S. qts. (2.26 L) of water. For improved performance, replace the mixing water with 2.57 U.S. qts. (2.43 L) of liquid created from a 3-to-1 ratio of water to Planicrete UA.
2. Place 3/4 of the mixing liquid into a clean pail. Mix with a medium-speed drill (at 500 to 850 rpm) and a ribbon paddle.
3. Slowly add Concrete Renew powder while mixing. While mixing, add the remaining liquid to achieve the desired consistency.
4. Mix for at least 2 minutes to a lump-free consistency.
PRODUCT APPLICATION
Read all installation instructions thoroughly before installation.
1. For best results protect from wind and direct sunlight.
2. If priming the prepared substrate, use a roller to apply a mixture with a 3-to-1 ratio of water to Planicrete UA. Ensure that there are no puddles.
3. Immediately apply a scrub coat of the mixed Concrete Renew to the prepared surface.
4. Apply an initial coat of Concrete Renew to the desired thickness using either a trowel, a hopper gun or a plaster pump.
5. Finish the first coat to a brush finish or a light broom texture.
6. After 3 hours apply the second coat, then finish the coat with a broom finish perpendicular to the previous layer.
7. If a third coat is required repeat step 6.
8. Apply a sealer as per the Curing section instructions.
EXPANSION AND CONTROL JOINTS
▪ Honor all expansion and control joints.
▪ Fill any saw-cut joints with a suitable joint sealant to protect against water intrusion and freeze/thaw damage.
CURING
▪ Concrete Renew is self-curing.
▪ Concrete Renew should be sealed with a compatible water-based sealer within a few hours of placement when temperatures are above 70°F (21°C). Apply Mapecure™ CS WB for a glossy finish, or a silane-based sealer such as Planiseal WR 40 or Planiseal WR 100 to prevent efflorescence. Protect from dust and contaminants until the sealer application.
▪ The sealer should be applied within 24 hours of the application of the final coating of Concrete Renew.
PROTECTION
▪ Wait at least 1 hour before exposing to pedestrian traffic.
▪ Protect the fresh Concrete Renew from excessive heat, wind, and direct sunlight, which could cause premature surface drying.
▪ Protect surrounding landscapes, hardscapes and structures during all phases of the installation.
CLEANUP
▪ Wash hands and tools with water promptly before material hardens. Cured material must be removed mechanically.
LIMITATIONS
▪ Do not install over substrates containing asbestos.
▪ Do not install over standing water or if rain is expected within the next 4 hours of the installation.
▪ General application thickness should be no greater than 1/8" (3 mm) per lift.
▪ Two or more coatings of Concrete Renew are generally required. For applications on substrates exposed to vehicular traffic always use diluted Planicrete UA mixed with Concrete Renew and apply in three coats.
▪ Before application, test all surface treatments on a small sample area to ensure that the desired results will be achieved.▪ Concrete Renew can be used for minor patching less than 3/16" (4.5 mm) deep and 2" (50 mm) in diameter. Reduce the mixing liquid by 40% and mix to a stiff consistency.
▪ Verify compatibility before coloring with iron oxide pigments and liquid color packs. Consult the manufacturer regarding proper use and dosages. Always perform a mock-up before application.
▪ Concrete substrate and ambient temperature must be between 45°F and 86°F (7°C and 30°C) before application. Temperatures must be maintained within this range for at least 8 hours after the installation. Allow for extra curing time when temperatures are below 65°F (18°C).
▪ Concrete Renew is not intended for use as an industrial wear surface or for heavy traffic.
▪ Do not mix more material than can be applied within 20 minutes.
▪ Do not re-temper or add more mix water. Remixing or adding more water will change the final cured color.
▪ For applications subject to freeze/thaw conditions or beyond light residential use, always mix Concrete Renew with a mixing liquid created from a 3-to-1 ratio of water to Planicrete UA.
▪ Do not expose Concrete Renew to rolling or dynamic loads for at least 24 hours after installation.
▪ Do not allow Concrete Renew to bridge any moving expansion joint, crack and/or control joint.
